If you joined me here last week, you saw that I started Insanity!
You can go back and read the post, to see what I thought about the first week!
Since Insanity is a 60 day program, and honestly the first at-home workout program that I am taking seriously, I thought it would be fun to do a weekly update. This way, you can follow my Insanity journey, and see if it's right for you.
For those of you who haven't looked into Insanity seriously, it is a DVD bundle. I believe there are 12 DVD's each containing a workout on them. Month 1 the workouts you do are called things like: Pure Cardio, Cardio Recovery, Plyometric Cardio Circuit .... etc etc. These workouts are about 40 minutes long.
Between month 1 and month 2, there is a " recovery week". This whole week you do, a workout called Core Cardio and Balance.
Month 2 starts the "max" workouts. From what I've heard, month two feels like you are starting all over again on day 1 because it is so intense. These workouts are about 50-60 Minutes.

SO.... here's how I'm feeling after 14 days of Insanity:
The workouts have gotten easier for me. Days 1 and 2, I was suckin' wind... but now it's a challenge, just not so much a struggle. "Cardio Recovery" -- is my least favorite day of all. It's basically a stretch workout, which I understand some people might be thanking the lord for, if this is their first time doing an intense workout program.. .BUT, for me, it feels like an 'off day' and Insanity already gives you 1 full day of rest. So.. that's my only complaint.
On the other hand, after talking to a friend who is also doing Insanity we are both having trouble burning more than 350 calories per workout. I use a HR monitor and always make sure that I track how many calories burned, and surprisingly I have yet to break 400. By no means do I slack during these workouts. I give it my all. So for me, Insanity is GREAT -- but I need more of a workout than just that.
In addition to Insanity, I am running around 20 miles a week. I try to make sure I burn 500 calories a day (or more) during exercise.
I have yet to hear from a single person who has completed Insanity and said "this hasn't worked for me". Every single review, or person I have talked to has had amazing results -- this is why I'm sticking with it!
Here are some motivation before and after's that I have seen floating around the internet:
The last review... Vanessa, Is the most motivating to me. We have the same start weight, same start body fat %, and very similar measurements. I'm hoping that if I keep it up, I'll end up shredded like her! (;
Note on the Insanity Meal Plan: Insanity comes with a pretty awesome meal plan. It suggests 5 meals a day, with the calorie counts depending on your goals. Less calories for weight loss, a moderate amount for maintenance, more calories for weight (muscle) gain. I chose to use bits and pieces of the meal plan, but the biggest diet changes I have made are : NO dairy, and NO added sugars. Thats right, I cut out dairy entirely. Almost everything I eat is non-processed. There are a few exceptions, but I use Jillian Michael's rule: If it doesn't come from the ground, or have a mother -- don't eat it.
I also count calories. I count every single calorie actually. Even if it is mustard on a Subway, sub-- it is accounted for. I can go into further detail at a later date about my current meal plan, but for now you get the gist!

You go girl! I'm looking forward to seeing your results. Thanks for sharing those before/after's too! My hubby is wanting to give Insanity a try and wants us to do it together. I'm scared I'll fail- but hey, who isn't scared of failure?! Thanks for some morning motivation sweet thing!!
ReplyDeleteYou could easily get through Insanity Erin! The first 2 days are intimating, but once you've done each workout once... its a breeze... kinda (;
DeleteThat's awesome that you are loving it and that it takes your mind off missin your hubby, at least for a small part of the day!!! :) I am interested in the calorie counting... I have recently started the C25K program, I'm in week 2 and I wanted to track calories too but I keep loosing track at the beginning of the day! On this non processed foods, do you eat like bread or crackers or tortillas? I am very interested in how all that works too!
ReplyDeleteKeep up the hard work, I love your encouragement by simply sharing your experiences!
C25K is AWESOME -- I went from not being able to run a mile... to running a 24 minute 5K in 8 weeks. Now I'm training for a half marathon. I give all the credit to that program.
DeleteWhen it comes to calorie counting, it is important to know how many calories you need to maintain your weight. If you want to lose weight, subtract 500 calories to lose 1LB per week.... dont go any lower than 1,200 calories AFTER exercise.
I have a friend that lost 25 LBS strictly by using MFP. It is an amazing thing if you use it all the time. Just by using it within the last week, I have become so calorie conscious. I google nutritional information from restaurants before I go out ALWAYS.
When it comes to carbs, I eat whole wheat bread, english muffins, brown rice, and whole wheat tortillas! Anything multi-grain or whole wheat. And I try to keep it one serving per day!
Hope this helps (:
Congrats on graduating girl! That's awesome. And of course this Insanity business is awesome too!! I need to get back on the working out bandwagon as I've taken some weeks off, yikes! Hopefully see you on the 23rd...still trying to figure it out :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much (: Hope to see you there!!
DeleteGreat Job! I found when i went to the second half I burned more calories just because they are an hour long.
ReplyDeleteYou and I should seriously talk! I LOVE Insanity - I do some of the workouts in addition to my gym routine. I just have to be careful because some of the exercises irk my knee injury. Also, I'm looking to cut out all added sugars & dairy... this could be a fun journey together! Keep up the great work.
ReplyDeleteI am beyond happy I found your blog. So I'm sitting here blogging and looking at great outfits when I should be in the living room 'digging deeper'. I had a slight injury with Insanity and went on a little hiatus. Now I'm back on the grind and so glad I found you. I need some inspiration so thank you for posting about this. Encouragement goes a long way. xo
ReplyDeleteGood luck! My husband did Insanity for a while, but didn't really see much of a difference until he paired it with running (run a couple miles one day, do a video the next). He did the program for the whole 60 days and then some, but isn't sticking to the "calendar" as much anymore because of the added running.
ReplyDeleteBut it's working..>!!!
