The Truth About: My Name

Anyone remember this song? Slightly obnoxious and stuck in your head for the rest of the day?

Well this song comes to my head whenever I get crazy renditions of my name!
So today I give you the truth about.... my name!

  • My name ... is Leigh Anne ... that would be L-E-I-G-H ... A-N-N-E.
  • It is pronounced LEE - ANN, like Jet Lee and Ann of Green Gables.
  • 9 people out of 10 spell my name wrong. 10 people out of 10 SAY my name wrong when trying to pronounce it.
  • Leigh is my first name and Anne is my middle name.
  • My name has meaning behind it. My mom's middle name is Lee and my aunt's middle name was Ann... together came a new spelling and the creation of Leigh Anne.
  • I was almost a Kimberly -- hmm, makes me think of Kimmy off of Full House.
  • ALL of my family calls me "Leigh Anne"
  • When I was in 1st grade, I told my teacher Mr. Doorley that I wanted to be called "Leigh" ... what? Yep, I was a rebel without a cause from age 6.
  • From then on I was known as Leigh to all my friends... just Leigh, one syllable Leigh.
  • The older I got the more I realized that Leigh was apparently difficult for everyone in society to grasp. I constantly got called "Leah"... or "Lay"...
  • Thats when I tried to re-establish myself as Leigh Anne. I added my middle name to my facebook page, I attempted to introduce myself as Leigh Anne... I signed papers Leigh Anne... this was my new alias
  • My close friends never caught on... my husband still hasn't caught on... but to all of you I am Leigh Anne and that's the way I like it
  • I like the flow, I like that there is less confusion to be called "Leah' or "Lay"... I like that there are two syllables.
  • I've considered legally changing my first name to Leigh Anne -- way too much work.
  • Yet I always... ALWAYS get lovely e-mails from readers saying "Hi Leann" or "Hi Leigh-Ann
  • I hate to correct people.... but "That's not my name".
  • What do I prefer, you ask ? Leigh Anne! ... will my friends which I've known for years ever catch on? Probably not but hey that's what family is for!
  • Through this name saga of my life I make a concerted effort to ALWAYS spell peoples names correctly, because I know how much of a pet peeve it is!
Any of you have any name pronunciation woes? I'd love to hear! (:

  1. My name is Leigh and I have no middle name. Always having people get it wrong too! I wouldn't change my name though...I love the spelling! :)

  3. My daughter's name is Carleigh. When I got her named tattooed the artist argued over the spelling of her name. He said that since it was spelled that way her name wasn't "Carlee" it was "Carlay". The woman that did the cake for the baby shower also argued with me over it. I have never heard of Leigh (being an alone name or being tagged on to the end) being spelled Liegh!

  4. Good post! I think I was always spelling it 'Ann"- oops sorry!
I have always had trouble with my last name before I got marred- Hooper..people spell it COOPER (different name completely) or HoPPer..which is annoying!!
Now that I am married, my last name, Oosterhof, is nearly impossible got people- We are forever getting oo-sterhof..but it is really pronounced as if there is just one 'O' at the beginning (it's Dutch) or people spelling it with 2 'f''s on the end.
I understand your peeve, I am going to do better!!
Have a great day, sad to see the series come to an end!

  6. haha well, i would have pronounced your name right, but I know a lot of Leigh's and even have a friend "Kelly Ann". It doesn't bother me too bad if people mispronounce my name, except when they call me Kelly. I guess i need to enunciate. But when someone comments or emails me or writes on facebook where my name is RIGHT THERE and misspells it, I'm just like, IT'S RIGHT THERE! haha

  7. I'm always conscious of the way I spell others names. I have two friends, Aimee and Amy, and always make sure I double check to get it right. I agree with Kerrie, when the name is right there it's kind of annoying. I'm a Jennifer and my pet peeve is people who assume I'm a Jenny. For some reason that's always bothered me, but I always smile and politely let them know I'm a Jennifer or Jen. :)

  8. My moms name is Alyce, pronounced like "uh-lease" haha but people always call her Alice like Alice in Wonderland, drives her nuts!!

  9. Don't you get so annoyed when people act like spelling doesn't matter? It's like, "Hello! That's not my name!" Hahaha! My full name is Lindsay, usually called Linz by family and old close friends. In college, Linn/Lin caught on, and even I started introducing myself as such. The are definitely two groups of people in my life: The Linz Group and the Linn Group. Both work for me! However, some of the Linn friends are transitioning over to Linz, because I think they don't want to use a different name than my family. :-)

When I go to placed that take a name, and I say Linn, I usually get:
    Wynn
    Gwen
    Glenn

If I say Lindsay, I get:
    Leslie (ALL THE TIME!)
    Lizzy
    Cindy
    Libby

Is Lindsay really THAT uncommon? Haha!

  10. i am the same way with mine. people pronounce it with a Z, but it's a freaking S people! leSley...
i also get called lindsay all the time and frankly when people call me something different, it's an insult!
i hate to correct people also, but it's so frustrating.
    i feel your pain.

  11. Mine is the same way it's Brittany people always try to spell it every possible way but mine (-eny, -ney) and we don't vn pronounc it the wy it's spelled. Everyone calls me "brittney" when really its pronounced "Brit-any" I just prefer Brit but that opens up a whole other can because people really wonder if that is my real name.

  12. I know a lot of Leigh's so I would have gotten it right. haha!

My husband and family and friends from high school still call me Missy because I went by that for the longest time. When I graduated and started working and then started college I decided I wanted to go by my actual name Melissa. It actually took me a while to even answer to Melissa. Ha! I will still forever be called Missy though by my hubby and family but thats ok. It would probably be weird if they changed it anyways.

Now my maiden name was Vaughn and no one could pronounce that (outside of people who already knew how)... They would always say (va gon) or if you were on the phone they would think you were say bond. So annoying!

  13. You know me and my hyphen woes...but wouldn't change being a Lea-Ann with a hyphen, capital A for anything even though I have 20 misspelled school awards and get called Lea by telemarketers constantly. I actually have a middle name also....full name Lea-Ann Marie. So I try hard to remember you prefer Leigh Anne over Leigh :-)

  14. Hahaha! Aren't people ridiculous?!? People confuse my name with Melissa ALL THE TIME. I can't wrap my mind around it.

My first day of 7th grade a teacher was calling attendance and kept saying "Michael" instead of "Michelle." He made tha mistake until I graduated from high school! And a lot of other people have done it too. Crazy.

  15. My name is Kirstin - spelled with 2 i's. And it's pronounced like "curse-tin". No one ever gets it right. I get called Kris-tin, Keer-stin, Kristie, Crystal. No one ever spells it right. Yup. I feel your pain. :)

  16. My best friend's name is Leigh. Her middle name is Ann. Sometimes I call her Leigh Ann. :)

  17. =) Totally identify with that one. My name is pronounced Alicia (uh-lee-sha) but spelled Alesha...it's actually more phonetically correct that Alicia. I've been called all sorts of weird things before. The worst was Ashely or Alisha...I'm not quite sure how they got Ashely out of Alesha...whatever. =)
    Alesha <3

  18. I feel the same way. No one ever, EVER, spells or pronounces my name right. It's Cassie, as in Cass-E. I get spellings such as: Casey, Casy, and Cassey. And while introducing myself almost everyone says "Hi, Kathy" I don't like correcting people either so I usually let it go. Oh, and I know Leigh is pronounced like Lee (that's my middle name!)

  19. I get called Emily more than anyone will ever know. I'm an Emma! Not an Emily. Lol

I have a friend I went to high school with named Leigh Anna...your name is pretty easy to remember because of that :)

  20. (Not saying your name is Leigh Anna...just easy to remember to switch out the a for an e ;))

  21. My name is Nikki - but I'm actually a Nicole. I've gone by Nikki since I was tiny though so it stuck. However, people constantly spell it wrong and I probably get called Vicki or Mickey at least several times a week. I would say most people can relate to these woes!

  22. I totally hear ya!! My name is Anica pronounced like Monica with no 'm'. 99% of the time people will call me something other than my name. I've gotten so used to it I ways respond no matter what. It's annoying, yes, but I learn to deal. I love my unique name and wouldn't change it for anything. :)

  23. It's so annoying when people spell your name wrong!! I don't usually get people pronouncing my name wrong, but I get the "is it a-y or e-y?" all the time. Which is fine... until people who know me continually spell it e-y even though I've told them a million times that's not how I spell my name.

And then once in a while I get the people who will say my name "lindSAY" as in, huge emphasis on the SAY part because I spell it a-y. Nope, sorry people, it's said the same whether my name is spelled LindsAy or LindsEy.

  24. Leigh Anne,
I loved reading this post! My name is Magen and is frequently mispronounced :( There are so many different spellings and variations of my name. People always pronounce my name as Megan, and I feel like I am always correcting them. I hate always having to do that. To me my name sounds the way it is spelled (MAYgen). People don't always understand what the big deal is...Megan and Magen are the same thing...so similar...so close to the same...etc,etc. To me it would be like calling Bob, Bill. I know it is just a simple vowel sound, but to me it makes all the difference in the world ;) So I feel your pain :)

  25. Leigh Anne- I have the exact opposite issue. My name is Leah ("Lee-Uh"), but for some reason, people sometimes pronounce it "Lee". Come on.. it's phonetic.. they get a stupid look!

  26. This was so fun for me to read, because I completely understand. My birth name is Victoria, but ever since kindergarten (and probably much before that) I've gone by Torie. Spelled that way the whole time. This meant that every first day of classes (and still to this day) I have to make the correction. Typically, when asked for a spelling, people go "T-O-R..." and wait for me to finish. I say "I-E" and they look at me funny or comment on how different that is, but write it down anyway. Occasionally I get a "T-O-R-I..." and then when I say "E" they say "T-O-R-E?" and I say, "No, I-E". Oh the woes. Haha, it's not even that I don't like the name Victoria. It's just that I've always been a Torie and can't really see myself any other way. As a side note to end this really long comment (you're lucky I didn't start in about my last name ;) ) my middle name is Leigh! :)

  27. As you know, my name is Leanne too (just a different spelling). I so fully understand your name woes. I have had my name spelled EVERY single way that someone can spell Leanne. {Leigh Anne, Leann, LeAnne, LeAnn, LeeAnne, you get the idea}

I have never understood why it's so hard to look at a way I sign an email and then reply and STILL get it wrong. Sigh. It has followed me my entire life. Even people I know and work with get it wrong. Oh, well. Tis the curse of the Leanne's or the Leigh Ann's :)

  29. I hear you! My name is Kyla. It's only four letters, and is pronounced like Kyle but with "la" at the end. I've been called Kayla, Kylie, Karla, Karly. I don't get how it is so hard to pronounce my name!
